  Do not rinse or spit for 24 hours after surgery.

Keep fingers and tongue away from socket or surgical area.

Sleep propped up for the first night after surgery.

Use ice pack on surgical area (side of face) for first 24 hours, apply ice (or frozen bag of peas) wrapped in towel/ cloth 20 minutes on – 10 minutes off

Take regular painkillers every 6-8 hours as per prescription. Also take the antibiotics as prescribed.

Drink plenty of fluids (Do not use a straw) and have a soft and cold diet for the first 24 hours.

Avoid hot drinks/alcohol/exercise in the first 24 hours.

A certain amount of bleeding is to be expected in the first 24 hours following surgery. Bleeding can be controlled by applying pressure to the surgical area using a small rolled gauze or clean handkerchief for 30 minutes. For persistent and excessive bleeding call the number provided.

After 24 hours use warm salt-water rinse or Chlorhexidine mouth wash rinse after every meal for the first week to flush out particles of food and debris which may lodge in the surgical area. (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water). After the first week use the syringe provided with warm salt water to flush the operation site.

Resume your regular tooth brushing after 24 hours, but avoid disturbing the surgical site so as not to dislodge the blood clot.

Diet may consist of soft foods, which can be easily chewed and swallowed. Add solid foods to your diet as soon as they are comfortable to chew. Have what you wish, taking care not to disturb the blood clot.

Expect difficulty in opening your mouth widely and discomfort upon swallowing which improves over the first two weeks.

Numbness of lips &/or tongue may be experienced for a variable period

You should experience no trouble if you follow the instructions and suggestions as outlined above. But if you should have any problems such as excessive bleeding, pain call the number provided for further advice or appointment
